.EU Domain Name Registration Terms and Conditions

The registration of a .EU domain name can be requested by:

  • a citizen of one of the European Union Member States, Iceland, Liechtenstein or, Norway, independent of their place of residence;
  • a natural person who is not a citizen of one of the European Union Member States, Iceland, Liechtenstein, or Norway, but who is a resident of a European Union Member State, Iceland, Liechtenstein, or Norway;
  • an undertaking that is established in a European Union Member State, Iceland, Liechtenstein, or Norway;
  • an organisation that is established in a European Union Member State, Iceland, Liechtenstein, or Norway without prejudice to the application of national law.

The domain name is registered to the first applicant, following the rule “first come, first served.” The right to the requested domain name is granted to the applicant who first submits a correct application and, if necessary, the correct supporting documentation.

Rules for registering classic (Non IDN) domain names:

  • must be at least 2 characters long.
  • may contain character a-z, digits 0-9, and hyphens (-).
  • can be a maximum of 63 characters long.
  • must not start or end with a hyphen.
  • must not contain hyphens in both the third and fourth positions.
  • must not consist solely of an active (alpha-2) country code.
  • can only be registered under the .eu extension

Rules for registering IDN (Internationalized Domain Name) domain names:

  • may contain character a-z, digits 0-9, and hyphens (-)
  • Unicode characters from the Cyrillic, Greek, or Latin alphabets. Click here to see the complete list of supported characters.
  • cannot combine characters from different scripts. All the characters of the second level (ie. the part before the extension) must come from a single script. Domain names made up of Latin characters will have the .eu extension, while domain names made up entirely of Cyrillic characters will have the .ею extension and and domain names made up from Greek characters will have .ευ extension. The digits 0 through 9 and the hyphen can be used with all Latin, Cyrillic and Greek characters.
  • A domain name must not start or end with a hyphen (-).
  • Names must not contain a hyphen in both the third and fourth positions simultaneously, except when preceded by ‘xn’ and when the domain name can be converted into a valid IDN name.

Rules for registering exclusively numerical domain names:

  • Consist only of the numbers 0 to 9 and the hyphen (-).
  • Can be registered under the .eu as well as the ею or .ευ extensions.
